Hanau Postcarré

Postcarré Hanau

New entrance from the west side

On the western outskirts of downtown Hanau lies the former meat district and the Kanaltorplatz square. This area can be easily reached from Kesselstadt and via the southern feeder road B45. But the city felt that this area comprising two hectares and the city’s main post office is becoming more and more of an inner-city eyesore. So it became our task to turn this entire space which used to be used by a slaughterhouse, post office, company Zimmermann and by the City of Hanau into a new and attractive city center.

Diversified design

The design presented by the Düsseldorf-based architectural firm RKW Architektur + Städtebau is geared to the city’s framework development plans and envisages various functional units for the new Postcarré. The new signature element will be a kidney-shaped building along the access road Am Steinheimer Tor. Its main appeal will be a colorful façade with rectangles in three different shades of red and generous glass areas. It will accommodate a health and beauty retailer, among other things. Other buildings include the renovated historic Brackerhalle that will accommodate various restaurants and shops and will be directly linked to the new building with its fresh foods market Kaufland, as well as the main post office which will be renovated as well. The ground floor of the main post office building will continue to be used by the post office, while the upper floors will be turned into a service center. Another building offers plenty of space for an Aldi discounter. This way, all components taken together will form a colorful, yet harmonious entity that will be highlighted by attractive parks.
