#Don'tshakeme: Charité Obstetrics Clinic & German Council of Shopping Places present joint project to prevent shaken baby syndrome

On 20 August, the Department of Obstetrics at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin hosted a symposium on the topic “From reactive to preventive child protectionNot only was the ten-year anniversary of the “Babylotsen” prevention project celebrated, but #SchüttelMichNicht, the joint project with the German Council of Shopping Places (GCSP), was also presented.

The focus of #SchüttelMichNicht is the prevention of shaken baby syndrome - the most common form of abuse in infancy - which often leads to severe or fatal brain damage. On the occasion of the symposium, around 50 maternity clinics nationwide initially received shaken dolls to educate expectant parents - around 60 more clinics will follow by the end of the year. In total, around 100 shopping centers will sponsor shaken baby dolls worth over 2022 euros for maternity clinics in this first-ever Germany-wide campaign by the end of 200.000. The shopping centers are supported by the GCSP members ECE Marketplaces GmbH & Co. KG, JAGDFELD RE Management GmbH, HBB Hanseatische Betreuungs- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH and VÖLKEL REAL ESTATE GmbH.

Like the Babylotsen project, which already had well-known support from the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth with Kristina Schröder, #SchüttelMichNicht also already has well-known supporters from politics, business and culture: For example, the Federal Ministry of Health sent a video message, while the project's patrons Julia Harting (discus thrower) and Robert Harting (world champion, Olympic champion & multiple German champion in discus throwing), among others, were on site in Berlin on Saturday together with actor Jan Josef Liefers, who handed over the simulation dolls.

"The Baby Guide and #SchüttelMichNicht are two important prevention projects to support children growing up healthily. They are an essential step towards more parental competence and thus more protection for children - I am delighted to have such important partners, the GCSP and its members, at our side in this important matter and to proclaim August 20th as World Shaken Baby Trauma Prevention Day on this special occasion.“, says Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Henrich, Director of the Clinic for Obstetrics at the Charité.

"Raising awareness of the issue of shaken baby syndrome is extremely important - we are therefore pleased to be able to make an active contribution to education and awareness-raising with the GCSP and our members. Shopping centers are there for everyone in a city. This strong connection is supported by the extraordinary commitment of the centers.“, says Ingmar Behrens, representative of the GCSP board.
