Postcarré Hanau
New entrance from the west
The former slaughterhouse site with Kanaltorplatz is located on the western edge of the city center of the Hessian major center of Hanau. The area is perfectly connected from the direction of Kesselstadt and via the southern feeder road B45. However, in the Brothers Grimm town, the two-hectare site, which is also home to the city's main post office, was increasingly seen as an eyesore in the city center. The task for HBB was to transform the entire area of the former users of the slaughterhouse, post office, Zimmermann company and the city of Hanau into a new, attractive center.
Varied design
The design by the Düsseldorf-based firm RKW Architektur + Städtebau is based on the city's framework plan and provides for various functional units for the new Postcarreé. The flagship will be a kidney-shaped building along the Am Steinheimer Tor access road.
It has a colourful façade with rectangles in three shades of red and generous glass surfaces, and will include a drugstore, among other things. Other buildings include the restored historic Brackerhalle for restaurants and shops, directly connected to the new building for a Kaufland fresh market, and the main post office, which has also been renovated, the ground floor of which will be taken over by the post office and the upper floors will be transformed into a service centre. Another building offers space for an Aldi discount store. The sum of the parts thus creates a harmonious whole, which is united by attractive green spaces to create a colourful yet harmonious ensemble.
