Surrounded by greenery: nursing home in a prime location in Völklingen
The Saarland medium-sized town of Völklingen is rightly known for the Völklinger Hütte, which is after all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. But in addition to the history of the mining industry that is visible everywhere in the city, the city is characterized above all by one thing: green spaces and parks. The St. Michael Hospital, north of the city center, was in a particularly good location in this regard. Its property is literally surrounded by attractive green spaces - with the small Schiller Park in the northeast, the larger BürgerInnenpark in the southeast and, above all, the foothills of the immense forest area that adjoins the site immediately to the northwest. No wonder that after the hospital closed and was demolished at the end of 2018, the site was considered a "prime location", integrated into one of the very good residential areas of Völklingen. The HBB was able to acquire this property in order to build another DOMICIL nursing home in Saarland.
Attractive, harmonious addition
On the corner of Nordring and Kühlweinstrasse, the new nursing home is easy to reach and at the same time visible from afar. It does justice to this exposure with an architecture that is as confident as it is inviting. The sober, cubic facades are not only visually loosened up by exposed balconies and loggias as well as individual bay windows, they also create a variety of opportunities for residents to step outside and enjoy the sun and the green surroundings. The light basic color of the building in combination with individual colored accents and the green outside area also creates a friendly basic atmosphere. Furthermore, the interior rooms, planned according to the most modern standards, also receive plenty of daylight through large windows. The outdoor areas are spacious - and of course suitable for seniors - and are oriented towards the forest areas to the north. The entire project was developed in close cooperation with all relevant authorities in the city of Völklingen and has received great approval in politics and administration. In total, the home offers a gross floor area of over 8.400 m2 A total of 150 care places in 140 rooms for residents. In keeping with the DOMICIL philosophy, attention was also paid to integration into the social environment, including the integration of a cafeteria that is open to the neighborhood.
