Zuckerfabrik Lehrte
Orderly conversion
One of the most important industrial plants in the town of Lehrte near Hanover was its sugar factory, which dates back to the 19th century. The industrial plant was operated by its owner, Nordzucker AG, until 1998 and then closed. What remained was a plot of land measuring around 200.000 square meters, the further development of which was not only in the interest of the town, but also of Nordzucker AG. Various sub-areas were defined here using urban framework planning, including an area of around 50.000 square meters for retail, services and housing. In addition to a Volksbank headquarters, a cultural center and offers for senior living, a shopping center was also required. To realize this, HBB founded a project company together with Nordzucker.
Sensible preservation of substance
The large site was revitalized in several construction phases and given a new use. A business, service and leisure complex was created with anchor tenants EDEKA, EHG expert and the dm chain with a total volume of around 20.000 square meters of gross floor space. The old metalworking shop, which was also located on the site, was renovated and now contains office space, the municipal art gallery and restaurants. The opening of the Zuckerfabrik shopping center in November 2005 meant that Nordzucker AG was able to transfer its site into the future in a sensible way - and for the people of Lehrte it was an attractive addition to the city center.
