Senior care home “St. Thomas Morus” on Gaußstraße in Saarbrücken

The time has come: Hamburg-based investor HBB will complete the new DOMICIL St. Thomas Morus senior care home in the Saarland state capital as scheduled in June 2025. The modern facility, with 1 care places, is scheduled to open on August 2025, 126, and will become a new home for the senior citizens moving in. The facility also marks an anniversary: It is the 50th senior care home built by HBB nationwide.

Saarbrucken. With the completion and handover of the new St. Thomas Morus senior care home, HBB continues its successful commitment in Saarbrücken. Two years ago, on August 1, 2023, the first senior care home of the Hamburg-based investor specializing in senior real estate opened in the Saar metropolis. Since then, it has also been operated by DOMICIL.

The St. Thomas Morus senior care home in Saarbrücken is already the 50th senior care home that HBB has commissioned to build in Germany – and all properties are owned by the real estate company or its shareholders. But it's not just the number 50 that makes the completion special. The location where Schneider Bau Generalunternehmer GmbH from Merxheim built the new senior care facility on behalf of HBB is also special.

Church history of the site successfully integrated

Until 2023, the 5.400 square meter property at Gaußstraße 5 in the St. Johann district housed the Catholic Church of St. Thomas More, including the parish hall and rectory. HBB was able to acquire the property from the parish in order to subsequently redevelop it as a modern senior care home. "This was possible primarily because we were able to initiate the project from the outset in close and trusting consultation with the parish. We greatly appreciate this positive cooperation and the trust placed in us," says HBB Managing Director Oliver Radünz.

Because, of course, sensitivity and empathy are required when building something new on the site of a former church. The success of the project is due in particular to the fact that the investor took the special history of the place into account and knew how to integrate this into the new building: for example, with a "room of silence" that will serve as a meeting place for the parish's community work. In close consultation with the congregation, various objects from the former church - including a bronze bas-relief by the sculptor Hilde Schürk-Frisch depicting Thomas More - were incorporated into the construction of the senior citizens' home. The same applies to the former fountain on the property. It was professionally removed and integrated into the spacious outdoor area of the new nursing home. "All of these are individual pieces of the mosaic, but taken together they represent the necessary sensitivity with which we implemented this project, also in the interests of the church and the congregation," summarizes Oliver Radünz.

Modern, bright and surrounded by greenery

The building has a total gross floor area (GFA) of 7500 square meters. It accommodates a total of 126 nursing beds in 111 resident rooms, the aforementioned "Room of Quiet" for the community, and a cafeteria that is also open to residents from the neighborhood. The building is surrounded by tranquil gardens.

Architecturally, the new senior care home has a modern, confident, and functional appearance. The white cube, with its clean lines and flat roof, blends into its surroundings in an inviting, transparent, and calming way. The large window fronts, even from the outside, suggest that residents will enjoy plenty of natural light in the facility's newly occupant living and common areas.

"The design advisory board of the city of Saarbrücken also endorsed this architecture," recalls HBB Managing Director Radünz. And the investor also took these concerns into account – namely, that the facility's location fits in with Saarbrücken's St. Johann district. And so, today, the new building blends harmoniously into the residential area, which lies between the city center and Saarland University and is characterized by terraced and detached houses, as well as multi-story apartment buildings.
